Moonstones are part of the Feldspar group of minerals that are known for their pearly and shimmering iridescence. This gemstone displays an optical phenomenon known as adularescence, which is a milky and bluish glow that originates from under the surface of the stone – akin to the glow of the Moon, which is where the gem derives its name.
Moonstones are usually colourless (known as white moonstones), but can also occur in shades of grey and pale pink. The most popular varieties, however, include specimens that display a metallic blue shimmer – also called Blue Moonstones.
In astrology, Moonstones have long been used in association with the Moon. These gemstones are said to strengthen love in relationships, and are also known to have benefits for one’s emotional quotient.
